SUPER GONORRHEA!!!

Although Gonorrhea is not tops on the list of patients in my practice (I’ve not seen an identified case in 10 years) it is still important to know about another ‘superbug’ that has been created by overuse of antibiotics.
In this case, the last line treatment, Ceftriaxone, has failed to treat Gonorrhea in a number of isolates from across the world. This implies a dangerous situations of untreatable Gonorrhea.
Of course, this infection has been around for ages and was the scourge of Europe and Asia prior to the antibiotic era (America too for that matter…didn’t mean to leave us out!). We may be going ‘back in time’ on this one, although for now, isolates of this sort, in Arizona, are not known.
