CHANTIX FOR QUITTING SMOKING & HEART RISK

A recent analysis of data from several studies suggests an increased risk in heart attack for patients quitting smoking using Chantix.
This data was published in a respected Canadian medical journal and does appear valid.
Risk is not great with the medication (absolute risk is 1.06 in 100 vs. baseline of .82 per 100), but that is statistically significant.
At this point, given the issue at hand, a discussion of ‘pros and cons’ is necessary before considering this medication.
In my experience I certainly have had positive feedback from patients that this medication is very effective in helping them quit, but the issues are more complicated given this new data.
So….before we begin Chantix….we’ll have a frank discussion and determine if it’s appropriate for you.
